UK Agriculture four seasons

Month - August

August
Dairy cows chilling out and enjoying the view.

August
A young highland cow grazing long grass. Livestock breeds have developed to reflect the needs of the local people in certain areas.

August
A muck heap that has accumulated over the winter is now being spread back onto the fields as fertiliser.

August
August is the main harvest month with combines working long hours getting the harvest in.

August
A mature ear of the wheat crop.

August
The header of the combine harvester. Combine harvesters may be expensive, but there is no other economical way of getting a cereal crop into the barn.

August
Combine peas being unloaded from the combine into a trailer.

August
A round straw bale. Straw is an important by-product of the arable farms of eastern areas and much is transported westwards each year to livestock producing regions.

August
As soon as harvest is over the ground is prepared for the next year's crops. Here a stubble is being ploughed.

August
Onions are now being harvested and are available fresh.

August
Sweetcorn is now in season. The crop, maize, is sometimes used for creating seasonal mazes.

August
In 2004 parts of the countryside were opened up for public access under "right to roam". Check a new OS map however as it is only land that has been officially designated as "open" that can be accessed this way.

August
Its not just farming that benefits from fine weather. Many farms have diversified into tourism.

August
Busy bumble bee.

August
A conservation margin alongside a crop of wheat with corn marigold, cornflower and poppy.
